About Us

HUGS is licensed nonprofit 501 c 3 organization registered to operate in Ohio that has been operating in Hamilton OH for the last 5 years. We have installed dozens of organic urban gardens; manage and garden in the Commerce Park Community Garden and the South Front Street Community Garden; managed and participate in several area farmers’ markets; were instrumental in getting Hamilton’s Urban Agricultural Ordinance passed; and given scores of organic gardening, self-reliance, and health and nutrition learning sessions throughout Butler County. HUGS’ co-founder Alfred Hall has been an Organic Urban Farmer, and local food system advocate, in Hamilton since 2008. Board of director member Bekki Turnbull manages the Brookwood School Garden at Hamilton City School’s Brookwood Elementary School. Board of Director member Ryan Smith is an Organic Urban Farmer on the west side of Hamilton and HUGS’ co-founder and volunteer Patricia Burbacher also farms in the city and delivers organic produce to area families. We have harvested and used or sold tons of fresh and preserved organic produce and products. We have been instrumental in getting local area restaurants to buy local food. HUGS also assisted Butler Tech’s D Russell Lee Campus reopen their greenhouse, co-managed the greenhouse for 3 years and designed and helped install their first ever greenhouse environmental sciences lab. HUGS has a network of several other greater Hamilton urban growers that we can draw on to supply organic produce. We have partnered with Butler County Metro Housing, Health Now and Serve City to install gardens that have brought fresh local produce to low and moderate income families and continue to look for addition ways to make local food available to all the citizens of Hamilton. To date we have finished our projects on time and budget while expanding our capabilities to serve the local community.
